Choose the rifle's action first, the job second and the load last, and the crowded seven-millimeter shelf gets a lot smaller.

The sevens reward a methodical buyer. Choose the action first, the job second and the load last.

AR-15 and short-action rifles

If you own an AR-15-sized rifle chambered for it, the 6.8 SPC is the cartridge, and 115-grain loads such as those at 6.8 spc 115 grain ammo are typical. For a short-action bolt rifle, the 7mm-08 is the gentle choice, and its loads are at 7mm-08 ammo for sale.

The 6.8 Western's soft-point loads, at 6.8 western soft point ammo, add magnum reach.

Standard long actions

A standard long-action rifle opens up the 7mm Remington Magnum, whose 150-grain loads are at 7mm rem mag 150 grain ammo. A break-action rifle chambered for the 7x57R takes the loads at 7x57r ammo.

Short magnums and big magnums

Short magnums pack their power into short actions. The 7mm SAUM's soft-point loads are at 7mm saum soft point ammo. The 7mm PRC is at 7mm prc ammunition.

For the biggest cartridges, the 7mm Remington Ultra Mag, at 7mm rum ammo for sale, belongs to a long, heavy rifle built to handle it. So do Hornady's 7mm Weatherby Magnum loads, at hornady 7mm weatherby magnum ammo.

The newest and the lightest

Lightweight hunting rifles favor modern designs like the 7mm Backcountry, whose 155-grain loads are at 7mm backcountry 155 grain ammo. Check that the chambering is offered in the rifle you want.

Buy and test

Buy two or three different loads in single boxes, shoot them from your own rifle and keep notes on groups and point of impact. When one load stands out, buy it in the quantity you need, ideally from a single lot, and keep the lot number.

Keep a short log of date, load, lot number, group size and conditions. A season later it will tell you more than memory does.

Plans like this are general guidance. Match the name on your barrel to the box, store ammunition cool and dry, and confirm current stock and state shipping restrictions before ordering.
