Eight Ways a Big-Bore Order Goes Wrong — Some of Them Unsafe
Most specialty-ammunition mistakes cost a return shipment. Big-bore rounds add a second kind of mistake: several of them are engineered specifically to be dangerous in the wrong gun, and the safety features only work if the buyer respects them.
Each of the eight below has a one-minute fix.
Treating a conversion round as a drop-in
460 rowland ammo for sale will not chamber in an unconverted 1911, and forcing the issue is the whole point of its longer case. It needs the barrel, spring and usually compensator of a conversion — a gun modification, not an ammunition swap.
Confusing the AutoMag with the .44 Magnum
44 automag ammo is a rimless case cut down from .308 rifle brass for the AutoMag pistol. It shares a bullet with .44 Magnum and nothing else.
Assuming a spelling variant is a different round
The phrasing 45 scofield is a common misspelling of Schofield, and listings under it are the same 1875 cartridge — skipping them because the spelling looks wrong means missing real stock.
Reading the abbreviation as a generic .45
45 gap is a Glock-specific short case, not a shorthand for .45 ACP. The two do not interchange in either direction.
Buying a rifle round for a revolver
45 raptor ammo is dimensioned for AR-10-pattern rifles despite sitting in the handgun catalogue. Confirm the platform before the bore.
Assuming the .500 family is one cartridge
.500 linebaugh ammo and s&w 500 magnum ammo share a bullet diameter and not a chamber. A Linebaugh case and an X-frame Magnum case are different lengths for different guns; the .500 S&W Special covered elsewhere in the series is the only member designed to drop into another member's chamber.
Skipping the pressure check on a custom-lineage round
475 linebaugh ammo and 454 casull both spent years as wildcats before factory standardization, and older custom revolvers were built to whatever their maker intended. A gunsmith's opinion on an unknown-history big-bore is not optional.
Finding the shipping restriction at checkout
Even the most ordinary round here, 38 special winchester, is carried by a smaller pool of online retailers than the caliber's popularity suggests once state restrictions are applied. Read the shipping page before comparing prices.
When in doubt about a match between a big-bore cartridge and a specific firearm, consult a qualified gunsmith before firing. Confirm current stock and your state's shipping requirements before ordering.
