The First Storm Won’t Wait for Your Blade Order
Winter operating cost is not decided by the blade’s unit price. It is decided by cost per mile, replacement labor, and the downtime created when the warehouse is missing the one blade size your busiest truck needs. A mid-season expedite may look like a purchasing issue, but it quickly becomes an operations problem: premium freight, delayed changeouts, worn edges kept in service too long, weaker scraping performance, and potentially higher chemical use.
The cause is usually not bad luck. It is an inventory plan built on last season’s memory instead of current fleet data.
A reliable pre-winter stock plan begins with the actual equipment—not the catalog. Walk every unit and record the blade type, length, thickness, hole pattern, and mounting system for every front, underbody, and wing position. Trucks with the same model number can still carry different edges after years of modifications and repairs. Treating the fleet as identical is how a warehouse ends up full of the wrong length while the critical SKU runs out.
Then build the master SKU list around the routes and operating conditions each blade family serves:

The key rule: calculate stock separately for every blade length, position, and product family. A warehouse can be well stocked overall and still fail operationally if it is short one wing blade or one underbody configuration.
Storage matters too. Keep spare blades dry, covered, off the floor, and away from salt or chemical exposure. Label each unit with its received date, order number, and batch information; rotate stock so older inventory is used first. This protects both the material and your traceability if a quality issue appears later.
