The Pujo That Pune's Bengali IT Community Built Together

Hinjewadi has evolved from a technology destination into a diverse residential community where professionals, families, students and residents from across India are building their lives. Against this backdrop, Oitijhyo Sarbojonin Cultural Association is set to host its first Sharodiya Durgotsav in Hinjewadi Phase 2 from October 16 to 21, 2026, creating a new platform for cultural participation, community engagement and shared celebration.

The association takes its name from “Oitijhyo,” meaning heritage. Its vision extends beyond preserving traditions from the past. It seeks to reinterpret cultural heritage for a new generation while creating an inclusive space where residents can connect, participate and build relationships beyond their apartment communities and workplaces.

From Technology Hub to Living Community

Hinjewadi has transformed significantly since the development of Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in the mid-1990s. The area today encompasses technology campuses, residential societies, educational institutions, retail spaces and expanding neighbourhoods, making it an increasingly important part of Pune's urban landscape.

As more people settle in Hinjewadi, the nature of the neighbourhood is also changing. Professionals who initially arrived for employment are purchasing homes, raising families and establishing long-term roots. Residents from Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and smaller towns now share the same neighbourhood.

While infrastructure such as roads, commercial centres and the upcoming metro connectivity is helping integrate Hinjewadi with the wider Pune region, Oitijhyo believes that a truly connected neighbourhood requires something more: meaningful human relationships.

Its first Durga Puja is envisioned as one such opportunity.

Why Durga Puja Matters to a Growing Community

Durga Puja is much more than a religious observance. It brings together art, music, craftsmanship, food, performance and community participation. UNESCO recognised Durga Puja in Kolkata as an element of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, highlighting its role in collective cultural expression.

For Bengalis living away from Bengal, the festival can provide a powerful connection to home and tradition. The sound of dhaak, dhuno, anjali, bhog, cultural performances and familiar songs create memories that connect generations.

For Oitijhyo, however, the celebration is intended to extend beyond the Bengali community.

The association describes its approach through the meaning of “Sarbojonin” – for everyone. Residents from different linguistic, regional and cultural backgrounds are invited to participate, whether through the Puja, cultural programmes, food, music, children's activities, art or volunteering.

A Resident-Led Celebration

Oitijhyo is not positioned as a replacement for existing Durga Puja celebrations in Pune. Instead, it aims to establish a distinct resident-led platform in Hinjewadi Phase 2 focused on participation, transparency, cultural continuity and shared responsibility.

The association believes that a community celebration becomes meaningful when residents contribute rather than simply attend.

Volunteers can participate in decoration, cultural programmes, event management, children's activities, hospitality, senior citizen support and other initiatives. Even small contributions can help transform an event into a collective experience and lasting community memory.

Putting Nari Shakti at the Centre

Women’s leadership is a central part of Oitijhyo’s first celebration. Inspired by the symbolism of Maa Durga as an embodiment of strength, courage and resilience, the association aims to translate the idea of Nari Shakti into visible leadership within the organisation.

Women are expected to play active roles in planning, decision-making, financial responsibilities, creative direction and execution of the celebration.

Through its broader 51 Nari Shakti vision, Oitijhyo also seeks to recognise women who demonstrate strength in different ways – including entrepreneurs, professionals, homemakers, teachers, caregivers, students and artists.

The objective is not simply to celebrate feminine strength symbolically, but to recognise women who demonstrate it in everyday life.

Building Connections Beyond the Festival

The Sharodiya Durgotsav will serve as the first major expression of Oitijhyo's wider community vision. The association aims to explore year-round activities involving music, literature, art, social initiatives, environmental awareness, health awareness and opportunities for local talent.

The larger objective is to create a platform where residents can preserve cultural traditions while remaining connected to the diverse community around them.

From October 16 to 21, 2026, Oitijhyo Sarbojonin Cultural Association will bring residents together in Hinjewadi Phase 2 for its inaugural Sharodiya Durgotsav.

For children, it could become a first stage performance. For senior citizens, a familiar sense of community. For working professionals, an opportunity to meet the neighbours they rarely see beyond their daily routines. And for women, a platform to lead and contribute.

Hinjewadi has built companies, careers and homes at remarkable speed. Oitijhyo now seeks to contribute to the next stage of that journey – building connection, community and a shared sense of belonging.
