You Are Probably Living in One Family of Testing Techniques

Testing techniques split into three broad families, and most teams unconsciously live inside just one of them. Recognizing which family you default to, and what the other two would have caught, is one of the more useful things a testing team can do for itself.

Three families, not a long list

The many named software testing techniques sort into three families. Specification based techniques, sometimes called black box, derive tests from what the system is supposed to do without looking inside it. Structure based techniques, or white box, derive tests from the code itself, its paths and branches and conditions. Experience based techniques lean on the tester's own knowledge, error guessing and exploratory testing among them. Almost every specific technique you can name belongs to one of these three, and each family is good at seeing a kind of failure the others are blind to.

What each family can and cannot see

Black box testing checks behavior against the specification, which is exactly what you want, but it cannot tell you that a whole branch of code never ran during your tests. White box testing can prove every line executed, but a hundred percent code coverage says nothing about a requirement that was never implemented, because you cannot cover code that does not exist. Experience based testing finds the strange, real world cases the other two never think to try, but it is hard to repeat and it lives in one person's head. Each family has a natural blind spot that another family covers.

The family you default to without noticing

Teams drift toward a family based on who they are. A group with a strong dedicated QA function tends to live in black box thinking, tests written from requirements. A developer heavy team leans structural, unit tests and coverage numbers. A small, scrappy team leans on experience, one sharp person poking at the build. None of these is wrong, but each leaves the same predictable gaps, and because the team only speaks one dialect, it does not notice what it is not testing.

Why one family is never enough

The failures show up in the seams. A black box suite passes cleanly while a critical branch has never once executed, the kind of thing structural coverage would have flagged immediately. A structural suite hits full coverage while the feature does the wrong thing, because the spec itself was misunderstood, which only specification or experience based testing would reveal. Both pass while an odd real world sequence, the sort no formal method would generate, breaks the system in production, which is exactly what exploratory testing exists to find. Any one family, run alone, certifies a partial picture.

Blend on purpose, not equally

The answer is not equal parts of all three. It is knowing your default and adding a deliberate dose of the others where the risk justifies it. A code heavy team adds specification based tests on the requirements that matter most and books real exploratory sessions. A requirements heavy team checks whether its tests actually exercise the code. You are not trying to master every technique. You are trying to stop being fluent in only one of the three languages your bugs speak.

Where this leaves me

Most teams are stronger than they think within their chosen family and weaker than they realize outside it. The cheap improvement is not learning exotic techniques. It is noticing which family you already live in, naming the blind spot that comes with it, and borrowing just enough from the other two to cover it. A suite that draws on all three sees failures that any single family would quietly wave through.
