How to Pick the Best Travel Credit Card When Every Card Claims to Be the Best?
Every travel credit card in India right now is selling you the same dream: free flights, airport lounges, and rewards on every swipe. The reality is messier. Some cards charge you ₹5,000 upfront before you've booked a single ticket. Others earn you miles that expire before you figure out how to redeem them. And almost all of them add 3.5% on every international transaction while calling themselves travel cards.
Here's how to actually cut through the noise.
Start With the Annual Fee Maths
The first filter should be simple: how much does the card cost you before it gives you anything back?
Cards like the Axis Atlas and HDFC Regalia Gold charge between ₹2,500 and ₹5,000 in annual fees. That's a real cost you need to earn back before you're in profit. Both are genuinely solid cards for high spenders, Axis Atlas earns strong EDGE Miles on travel, and Regalia Gold has a decent rewards rate and lifestyle memberships. But if you're spending under ₹3-4 lakh a year on the card, the annual fee eats into your returns before you've booked a single trip.
A lifetime free card with consistent rewards doesn't ask you to do that math.
Then Look at Forex Markup
This one stings the most because it's invisible until you check your statement. A standard 3.5% forex markup on a ₹1.5 lakh international trip quietly adds over ₹5,000 in charges. Axis Atlas, despite being a premium travel card, still charges 3.5% on international transactions. HDFC Regalia Gold offers a reduced rate but doesn't eliminate it.
Zero forex markup is exactly what it says: what you spend abroad is what gets charged. No conversion premium, no hidden spread on the network rate.
Understand What "Rewards" Actually Means
Not all reward systems are equal, and the fine print matters enormously.
HDFC's reward points redeem best through their SmartBuy portal, often at lower value outside it. Axis EDGE Miles work well if you're transferring to airline partners at a 1:2 ratio, but that process requires knowing which partners exist, which transfer ratios work in your favour, and timing your redemption before miles expire. For most people, that's more work than they want to do for a flight booking.
A simpler model: earn coins on everyday spends, redeem them directly against any travel booking inside one app, no portals, no partner transfers, no expiry anxiety.
The Scapia Difference
The Scapia Federal Credit Card is lifetime free, zero forex markup, and built around a single loop: spend daily, earn Scapia Coins, redeem directly for travel. Every eligible spend earns 10% back in coins. Book flights, hotels, trains, buses or experiences through the Scapia app and that jumps to 20%. UPI payments above ₹500 through Scapia Pay on the complimentary RuPay card earn 5%.
Five Scapia Coins = ₹1 in travel value. No cap on earnings, valid for 3 years, redeemable against 100% of a booking value if you've accumulated enough.
At airports, spend ₹20,000 in a billing cycle, and you unlock Airport Privileges across ~100 airports, either lounge access or coins back on spends up to ₹1,000 on dining, shopping at metro airports- your choice every time you fly. For international departures, book a flight of ₹50,000 or more through the app, and you unlock up to rewards on spends upto ₹2,000 on duty-free shopping or dining from the departing terminal for that flight in India.
The Honest Summary
If you're a high spender who flies business class multiple times a month and wants concierge access and airline mile transfers, a premium card with an annual fee makes sense. Work the system, and you'll extract real value.
For everyone else, the question is simpler: do you want a card that quietly makes your everyday spending fund real travel, without annual fees, without forex surprises, and without a redemption portal that requires a manual? That answer is easier to arrive at than the marketing makes it seem.
