Patrick Wales-Dinan is gaining continued recognition across collegiate athletics for his consistent ability to develop high-performing distance runners and build competitive programs. With a coaching career that spans respected institutions such as Long Beach State University, Duke University, Williams College, and Harvard University, Wales-Dinan has become known for delivering steady progress and reliable results.

During his tenure at Long Beach State, Patrick Wales-Dinan played a key role in elevating the university’s cross country and distance running programs. Since joining in 2012, his athletes recorded 32 top-10 finishes and established seven school records. More than 10 runners earned All-Conference honors, while six qualified for NCAA-level competition—clear indicators of the program’s upward trajectory under his leadership.

A standout moment came during the 2014 outdoor track season, when Chris Low delivered a remarkable performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Coached by Wales-Dinan, Low achieved First Team All-American status in the 800 meters, finishing seventh and setting a new school record with a time of 1:47.52. His season also included a conference title and victories at prominent meets, showcasing the effectiveness of Wales-Dinan’s training approach.

Distance runner Chris Enriquez also emerged as a key figure during this period. Under Wales-Dinan’s guidance, Enriquez qualified for the NCAA Finals in the 10,000 meters and broke a long-standing 5000-meter school record. His performances extended beyond collegiate competition, as he became the highest-placing collegiate athlete in the 10,000 meters at the USATF National Championships.

Both Low and Enriquez earned selection to the NACAC U-23 National Team, representing the United States internationally. Their success highlights the level of preparation and competitive readiness fostered within the program.

In cross country, Patrick Wales-Dinan’s influence was equally impactful. In 2013, he coached Enriquez to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships—the first Long Beach State athlete to achieve this milestone in the modern era. Enriquez’s 10th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional remains a record for the program.

That same season, Enriquez and Hillary Zator earned All-Conference recognition, while both the men’s and women’s teams improved to fourth place in conference standings. The results reflected a broader improvement across the program, not limited to individual performances.

Wales-Dinan’s impact was evident early in his tenure. In his first year alone, athletes set three school records and achieved three NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Gabe Hilbert secured a conference title in the 800 meters, demonstrating the immediate effectiveness of his coaching methods.

During the indoor season, Rosa Del Toro set school records in both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters before qualifying for the USATF Indoor National Championships. These achievements further reinforced the depth and strength of the program.

Beyond athletic performance, Patrick Wales-Dinan is widely recognized for emphasizing academic success. Throughout his coaching career, he has mentored more than 45 athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. His programs consistently reflect a balance between competitive excellence and educational achievement.

Prior to Long Beach State, Wales-Dinan contributed to successful programs at Duke University, where he helped develop NCAA qualifiers and All-ACC performers, including Madeline Morgan and Carly Seymour. His earlier work at Williams College also stands out, where he coached 10 All-Americans and worked with Jennifer Gossels, an NCAA Division III national champion.

As his career continues, Patrick Wales-Dinan remains a respected figure in collegiate distance running. His focus on structured training, athlete development, and academic balance has positioned him as a reliable leader in the sport—one who continues to shape successful programs and competitive athletes at every level.
