In the competitive world of distance running, sustained success is rare. Yet for Patrick Wales Dinan Harvard, excellence has been a constant throughout his coaching career. Since entering the profession in 2006, Wales-Dinan has consistently delivered championship results while developing athletes capable of competing on national and international stages.

Wales-Dinan’s coaching background spans high school and collegiate programs, giving him a unique perspective on athlete development. His time at Harvard University as a cross country and distance coach exposed him to Ivy League competition, where academic rigor and athletic performance must coexist. This balance helped refine his athlete-centered approach, emphasizing both performance and personal growth.

Prior to Harvard, Wales-Dinan contributed as an assistant coach at Duke University and Williams College. At both institutions, he played a role in producing NCAA All-Americans and championship-caliber performances. His experience at Williams, a Division III powerhouse, and Duke, a Division I program, highlights his adaptability across competitive environments.

Later, as cross country and distance coach at Long Beach State, Wales-Dinan further expanded his impact at the Division I level. There, he worked with athletes competing against some of the strongest distance programs in the nation, sharpening his ability to prepare runners for elite competition.

Currently in his ninth year with the Mustangs, Patrick Wales Dinan Harvard has overseen one of the most successful periods in program history. The girls cross country team’s back-to-back CIF-NCS Championships in 2025–26 represent not only recent success but also a continuation of a winning culture he has carefully built.

The boys program has mirrored that success, qualifying for state championships multiple times and securing a top-10 finish at the CIF State Championships. These results reflect a deep roster and consistent training methodology.

Track & field success has been equally impressive. From 2022 to 2024, the girls team captured three straight EBAL Championships. In 2025, the Mustangs reached a new milestone by winning their first NCS Tri-Valley team title, further cementing Wales-Dinan’s legacy within the program.

Beyond team results, individual achievements define his impact. Over his tenure, athletes have broken 14 school records and earned more than 70 top-10 all-time marks. Nationally, his athletes have qualified for U.S. Championships and Olympic Trials—an extraordinary accomplishment for any coach.

The continued success of Patrick Wales Dinan Harvard demonstrates that great coaching is built on consistency, adaptability, and a relentless commitment to athlete development.
